$5 Million John A. Hartford Foundation Grant To American Geriatrics Society Helps Train Residents To Meet The Healthcare Needs Of Older Americans

A generous $5.08 million, four-year grant from the John A. Hartford Foundation will enable the American Geriatrics Society (AGS) to dramatically expand its highly successful Geriatrics Education for Specialty Residents Program (GSR) -- an initiative designed to better prepare surgical and other specialty medical residents to care for the growing number of older patients.

The GSR supports collaborations between surgical and related medical specialty faculty and geriatrics faculty who together develop, initiate, and evaluate model programs that integrate geriatrics into surgical and related specialty residency training. Thanks to the Foundation's generosity, the AGS will be able to fund 75 collaborative projects nationally over the next four years.

"Roughly 40% of all hospital inpatients in the US are 65 or older, and older Americans undergo two to three times as many of the most common surgical procedures as younger Americans," says Dr. Ronnie Rosenthal, Project Director and Associate Professor of Surgery Yale University School of Medicine and Chief, Surgical Service VA Connecticut Healthcare System. "The Hartford Foundation's additional support for the GSR program will make an enormous difference in the surgical and specialty care older patients receive, ensuring that this care is tailored to their unique healthcare needs. Older patients require different care than younger adults and the population of older Americans will rise steeply in the next two decades."

The GSR is part of the Society's larger Geriatrics for Specialists Initiative (GSI), also funded by the John A. Hartford Foundation, which aims to help prepare surgeons and other medical specialists provide care tailored to the needs of the nation's growing population of older adults. The AGS' Section for Surgical and Related Medical Specialties oversees the initiative, which targets ten specialties -- anesthesiology; emergency medicine; general surgery; gynecology; ophthalmology; orthopedic surgery; otolaryngology; physical medicine and rehabilitation; thoracic surgery and urology.

Since the GSR was established in 2001, the initiative has supported 41 collaborations that have enhanced training for surgical and related specialty residents in medical schools and hospitals throughout the country. Many U.S. training programs, however, still lack curricula specific to the care of older patients. The goal of the GSR is to change this. The GSR does this in two ways. It fosters the development of geriatric education curricula for specialty trainees, thereby enabling these trainees to acquire the knowledge and skills to provide quality care for older patients. By focusing on these trainees, it also ensures that their knowledge is disseminated further when these individuals then teach colleagues, faculty and students in return.

"We are very grateful to the John A. Hartford Foundation for increasing its critical support for this program," says Dr. Rosenthal. "The Foundation has long supported efforts to increase the nation's capacity to provide more effective care to its rapidly increasing older population. This funding will allow us to do much more to improve the quality of healthcare that specialists provide to seniors in the US. "
