'Marketplace' Discusses Census Bureau Research on Rate of Uninsured in U.S.
APM's "Marketplace" on Thursday included an interview with Chris Farrell, economics editor for APM's... "Marketplace Money," about the Census Bureau's annual report on poverty, health insurance and income. The report found that the number of uninsured people in the U.S. increased by 800,000 to 45.8 million people in 2004 compared with 2003, but the percentage of uninsured people remained unchanged from 2003 at 15.7%. According to Farrell, the U.S. has a "crazy-quilt, dysfunctional, shredding system of health care, and it's not working. It doesn't matter where you look in our economy, no one is happy." Farrell said that potential solutions include allowing small businesses to "combine their buying power" by forming association health plans or developing a system that would remove employers from the process of providing health care and have individuals purchase coverage through vouchers or tax credits (Jagow, "Marketplace," APM, 9/1).
