'Red light' to be put on junk food ads
The proposals are set to be included in the forthcoming white paper on public health and could force advertisers to obey new strict guidelines such as implementing a "traffic-light" packaging system to indicate how healthily food is.
Obesity in the UK is estimated to be costing around £7.4 billion a year, with nearly three quarters of adults and a fifth of children being obese.
However, it is believed ministers are aiming to agree a voluntary code with food firms in order to avoid unwelcome legislation.
University of Birmingham scientists are also becoming increasing concerned about the nation's health and are warning that size rather than just weight could be increasing the risk of diabetes and heart disease.
The researchers are hoping that people will take note of increasing waist measurements, rather than just relying on bathroom scales, when assessing their lifestyle choices.
