12 health facilities seek special zone status in Japan
Behind the request to be considered for the special zone, under which government regulations are eased, is a growing shortage of nurses and care workers amid the aging of society, particularly in rural areas.
The government currently does not allow non-Japanese to work as nursing care workers and limits the period of time foreign nurses can work in the country. Under the circumstances, it will face a difficult decision during FTA negotiations that start Monday with the Philippines.
About 300 proposals were made by local governments and companies during the fifth application period, which ended Wednesday.
The government plans to designate new special zones in early September.
