18% of Employers Offering Full Pay for Maternity Leave; Percentage Down From 27% in 1998, Survey Says, USA
About 18% of employers offer full pay during maternity leave -- a decrease from 27% in 1998 -- according to a survey released on Thursday by the Families and Work Institute, a not-for-profit research organization, the Wall Street Journal reports. The survey of 1,092 employers found that although the percentage of companies offering partial paid maternity leave for new mothers increased from 60% in 1998 to 64% currently, the percentage who said compensation "depends on the situation" increased from 13% to 19% during the same time period. FWI said that cutbacks in paid leave likely are because of rising employer costs for health insurance benefits. "Until we solve the health care cost issue, we're going to see this trend continue," FWI President Ellen Galinsky said, adding that women need to plan how they will afford their time off now that "employees are being asked to pay a larger share." She said that women who told their bosses of their childbirth plans "earlier rather than later" and had ideas about who could manage their workload typically had bosses who were more amenable to their leave request. The survey found a "countertrend" for unpaid leave for new fathers, whose maximum job-guaranteed leave average increased from 13.1 weeks in 1998 to 14.5 weeks in 2005, according to the Journal (Shellenbarger, Wall Street Journal, 10/13). The data for the study was collected between Sept. 23, 2004 and April 5, 2005 (FWI release, 10/13).
