2006 Proves To Be Another Successful Year For The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation National Race For The Cure(R)
Today was a day to be celebrated in
the fight against breast cancer. This morning, more than 40,000 runners and
walkers gathered on the National Mall for the 17th annual Susan G. Komen
Breast Cancer Foundation National Race for the Cure(R). The 5K event was
successful in raising $2.3 million to provide funding for breast cancer
research, education, screening and treatment programs.
The Pre-Race Rally kicked off the morning with featured speakers
Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice; Former U.S. Ambassador to the Republic
of Hungary and Komen Foundation founder Nancy Brinker; CBS Early Show
Anchor Rene Syler; and Washington, D.C. Mayor Anthony Williams. Following
the Rally, the Parade of Pink celebrated the nearly 3,500 breast cancer
survivors in attendance with an emotional tribute to their victory over the
disease.
One of the biggest highlights of this year's Komen National Race was a
Pre-Race warm-up led by the most powerful woman in the world. Secretary
Rice and her renowned personal trainer Thomas Tomlo led participants in the
most memorable Race start to date.
The final event of the morning was the Komen National Race's newest
feature, Komen Kids for the Cure(R). The special obstacle course was
created especially for kids ages 5 - 10. With more than 700 children
participating, the inaugural Komen Kids for the Cure(R) Race was a huge
success.
A minimum of $1 million of the funds raised through the Komen National
Race will remain in the Washington, D.C. community - including Virginia and
Maryland - to fund outreach programs and initiatives that address the
specific unmet breast health needs of the area. The remaining net proceeds
support cutting-edge breast cancer research through the Komen Foundation
Award and Research Grant Program.
The Komen Foundation was established in 1982 by Nancy Brinker to honor
the memory of her sister, Susan G. Komen, who died from breast cancer at
the age of 36. Today, the Komen Foundation is an international organization
with a network of more than 75,000 active volunteers working through local
Affiliates and events like the Komen Race for the Cure(R) to eradicate
breast cancer as a life-threatening disease. A global leader in the fight
against breast cancer, the Foundation fulfills its mission through support
of innovative breast cancer research grants, meritorious awards and
educational, scientific and community outreach programs around the world.
Together with its Affiliate Network, corporate partners and generous
donors, the Komen Foundation has invested $630 million in the fight against
breast cancer.
