3,800 Hurricane Survivors Have Applied for Medicaid, SCHIP in Georgia
About 3,800 Hurricane Katrina survivors now located in the Atlanta area have applied for Medicaid or SCHIP coverage, the Georgia... Department of Community Health said on Thursday, Morris/Augusta Chronicle reports. The department is "essentially allowing refugees to simply declare that they are now Georgia residents and are unable to pay for health care," Morris/Chronicle reports. State Community Health Commissioner Tim Burgess said eligibility for hurricane survivors will continue for at least one year, adding that he expects the number of beneficiaries to continue to grow (Larrabee, Morris/Augusta Chronicle, 9/8). State emergency management officials on Thursday estimated that at least 12,000 households have come to Georgia from areas affected by the hurricane. Burgess said that the influx of survivors could significantly impact the state's $6.6 billion Medicaid budget (Schneider/Miller, Atlanta Journal-Constitution, 9/9). Burgess said Georgia is attempting to convince the federal government that the state should be able to recoup 100% of the health care costs for evacuees (Morris/Augusta Chronicle, 9/8).
