40 Tons Of Hamburger Patties May Have E coli O157:H7, USA

Quaker Maid Meats Inc, of Reading, Pennsylvania, has recalled 40 tons of hamburger patties because they may be infected with E. coli O157:H7. On Tuesday the FSIS (Safety & Inspection Services) announced that the company is voluntarily recalling the product.

Quaker Maid Meats says that anyone who has bought Philly-Gourmet frozen beef patties should get rid of them.

What is Escherichia coli O157:H7?
(Escherichia Coli = E.Coli)

It is one of many strains of E.coli. Most E.coli strains reside harmlessly in our intestines. However, the 0157:H7 strain can cause severe illness - it produces a powerful toxin.

Symptoms

- Bloody diarrhea
- Abdominal Cramps
- Non-bloody diarrhea (less common)
- Fever is slight, sometimes no fever at all
- Sometimes there are no symptoms at all
- It usually goes away 5 or 10 days later

It is particularly dangerous for very young children and elderly people as it can cause a complication called hemolytic uremic syndrome in which the red blood cells die and the patient ends up with kidney failure. Most cases of hemolytic uremic syndrome in the USA are caused by this strain of E.coli.

Only about one in fifty people infected go on to have complications.
