A Bioartificial Kidney?

Despite advances in dialysis, acute kidney failure while in the hospital carries a mortality rate that tops 50 percent. Current therapies filter body waste but fail to compensate for other renal functions, such as immune surveillance and metabolic activity.

In a clinical trial of a bioartificial kidney at UAB and 14 other centers, specialized living cells from unusable donor kidneys are encapsulated within hollow fibers of a renal assist device (RAD).

Nephrologist Ashita J. Tolwani, M.D., UAB principal investigator in the trial, said: "There they are protected from the patient's immune system while porous fiber walls allow cells to carry on physiologic exchange. The RAD thesis is that living renal cells can improve patients' infection-fighting capability, which normally is lost in acute renal failure."
