A&E Care threatened by drop in recruitment standards UK
NHS trusts are trying to increase the number of middle-ranking 'staff grade' doctors to meet service pressures, but low pay makes them hard to recruit. So instead, they are recruiting senior house officers, junior doctors some of whom have only one or two years' experience, to become staff grades.
One doctor tells BMA (British Medical Association) News that the SHOs simply do not have the experience to fill the staff grade posts, saying: 'It is all about quantity not quality.'
And Greg Dilliway, from the BMA staff and associate specialists committee, says: 'It is extremely worrying if trusts are employing doctors to do a job they do not have sufficient experience for... this is an issue of clarity for patients who need to know who they are seeing.'
