AMSA'S PharmFree Campaign Challenges Drug Company Influence

As medical students across the country celebrate the third annual National Pharm Free Day, the American Medical Student Association's (AMSA) national leadership will host a special event in support of the campaign here in Washington, D.C.

The Pharm Free campaign encourages medical schools and academic medical centers to develop policies that limit the access of pharmaceutical company representatives to their campuses and prohibit medical students and physicians from accepting gifts of any kind from these representatives.

Thursday's rally will be held at noon in the George Washington University Hospital Courtyard. Speakers include Gene Carbona, executive director of sales for The Medical Letter; Ilene Henshaw, AARP Senior Legislative Representative for State Affairs and comedienne Camille Bird. This event is sponsored by the American Medical Student Association (AMSA), AARP, Consumer Reports Best Buy Drugs, No Free Lunch, the National Physicians Alliance (NPA) and the Committee of Interns and Residents/SEIU (CIR).

"It is imperative that we, the next generation of physicians, take a stand against drug company influence. It is essential to our professional integrity and to our patients' health that we practice honest, evidence-based medicine," said AMSA president Jay Bhatt.

The pharmaceutical industry spends upwards of $8 billion on journal ads, promotions and gifts to physicians each year - roughly $10,000 per physician in the U.S. Studies show these efforts are working, with doctors more likely to prescribe a drug after a visit from a pharmaceutical company representative.

AMSA, the nation's largest independent medical student association, launched the PharmFree Campaign in 2002 to educate and train medical students to professionally and ethically interact with the pharmaceutical industry. AMSA also offers its members the opportunity to sign a Pharm Free pledge, which states they will "accept no money, gifts, or hospitality from the pharmaceutical industry" and "seek unbiased sources of information." AMSA is the only national medical organization to ban all pharmaceutical advertising in its publications and at its events.
