ASTRO Announces 2005 Gold Medal Winners

The American Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology (ASTRO) is pleased to announce its 2005 Gold Medal winners. C. Norman Coleman, M.D., and Allen S. Lichter, M.D., will receive their awards on Tuesday, October 18, during ASTRO's 47th Annual Meeting, being held in Denver October 16-20, 2005.

"The Gold Medal designation, the highest honor ASTRO awards, recognizes distinguished accomplishments and contributions in the field of radiation oncology," said Theodore S. Lawrence, M.D., Ph.D., ASTRO Chair. "I'm very proud of our two Gold Medalists; they represent the best in teaching, research and clinical care in radiation oncology. Their selection is a testament to the high caliber of physicians, scientists and researchers who are members of our Society."

Dr. Coleman, the Director of the Radiation Oncology Sciences Program and Associate Director of the Radiation Research Program at the National Cancer Institute, has had a distinguished career since graduating from Yale University Medical School in 1970. Dr. Coleman has excelled in the academic arena, reaching his apex in the university sector as Professor and Chairman of the Department of Radiation Oncology at the Joint Center for Radiation Therapy at Harvard Medical School. At NCI, Dr. Coleman spearheaded an effort at the National Institutes of Health in the wake of September 11th by holding a workshop on radiological and nuclear terrorism in December 2001. That workshop has become the blueprint for additional research and training in that area and Dr. Coleman continues to advise both the Bush administration and the Department of Health and Human Services on medical response to radiological and nuclear terrorism. In addition to his NCI duties, he now serves as a visiting professor in the Department of Radiation Oncology at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore.

Dr. Lichter is Dean of the University of Michigan Medical School in Ann Arbor, Mich., and has dedicated much of his professional career to teaching the next generation of radiation oncologists. After finishing his residency in radiation oncology at the University of California, San Francisco, Dr. Lichter began his career as an Instructor in both Oncology and Radiology and Radiological Science at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He remained there until 1978 when he accepted a position to head the Radiation Therapy Section in the Radiation Oncology Branch at the National Cancer Institute. While at NCI, Dr. Lichter, along with other researchers, pioneered a study in breast cancer that proved a lumpectomy plus radiation therapy was as good as a mastectomy for many breast cancer patients. In 1984, Dr. Lichter became a Professor of Radiation Oncology at the University of Michigan Medical School where he has remained since becoming Dean in 1999. While at Michigan, Dr. Lichter, along with other colleagues, has been instrumental in the development of three-dimensional conformal radiation therapy.
