Alzheimer's patients helped with extracts of sage and lemon balm
According to Prof. Elaine Perry, the extracts delivered promising results in her studies. She works at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne, UK.
In a conference Perry said 'In controlled trials in normal volunteers, both extracts improved memory, and lemon balm improved mood. Lemon balm reduced agitation and improved quality of life in people with Alzheimer's disease.'
Perry and her team said that preliminary studies indicated that sage helped attention and behaviour problems experienced by people with Alzheimer's and other forms of dementia. The research is ongoing.
Perry said she had been studying the effects different plant species used in herbal remedies had on dementia. She was attempting to identify the main chemical components.
The team only identified minimal or no side effects on the patients and volunteers. Perry said that sage and lemon balm are worth investigating further.
Dementia is characterised by memory loss, decline in thinking, comprehension and judgement (progressive). It is suffered by millions of people all over the world.
There is no cure for Alzheimer's. The symptoms can be alleviated with drugs.
