American Association Of Kidney Patients Announces 2008 Medal Of Excellence Award Winner

The American Association of Kidney Patients (AAKP) is pleased to recognize Todd S. Ing, MD, as the 2008 recipient of the Medal of Excellence Award. The Medal of Excellence Award is one of AAKP's highest honors. It recognizes a renal physician who has dedicated his or her career to the advancement and treatment of kidney disease, and the care of kidney patients.

Dr. Ing has dedicated more than 40 years of service to the renal community. Currently he is courtesy staff physician in the Department of Medicine at the Veterans Affairs Hospital in Hines, IL, as well as Professor Emeritus of Medicine at Loyola University Chicago, Stritch School of Medicine. He is a key member of the renal community both nationally and internationally with his prior and current appointments to the editorial boards for, Hemodialysis International, Peritoneal Dialysis International, Transactions of the American Society for Artificial Internal Organs, Journal of the American Society of Paraplegia, Kidney and Hong Kong Journal of Nephrology. From 1985 - 2004, Dr. Ing was also the U.S. editor for the International Journal of Artificial Organs.

"Dr. Ing has spent much of his career unselfishly providing renal care to veterans," said AAKP President Roberta Wager, RN, MSN. "Because of his dedication and hard work, thousands of patients are living rewarding lives and receiving the best healthcare."

Dr. Ing is most highly noted for his extraordinary patient care and support. He has supplied veterans with outstanding renal care for more than 25 years and his enthusiasm for patients has been shown in his bedside teaching, publication of books and articles, and his organization of educational seminars for patients and healthcare professionals alike.

Dr. Ing is the founding president of the International Society for Hemodialysis and a member of the American Society of Nephrology. He has received several prestigious honors and awards including Distinguished Service Award from the National Kidney Foundation, National Torchbearer Award of the American Kidney Fund and Phoenix Award for Outstanding Teaching from Rush Medical College, Chicago.

Dr. Ing has authored more than 250 publications in the area of dialysis with emphasis on isolated ultrafiltration, complications of dialysis, dialysate composition and peritoneal dialysis. He is also co-editor of the Handbook of Dialysis which has been translated into nine different languages and is widely used around the world. AAKP is both proud and pleased to present the Medal of Excellence Award to such a fine nephrologist.

AAKP will honor Dr. Ing at its Medal of Excellence Award Dinner on Sunday, March 16, 2008, in Austin, TX, at the Renaissance Austin Hotel. The award ceremony is held in conjunction with the Renal Physicians Association's Annual Meeting. AAKP is the voluntary, patient organization, which for more than 35 years, has been dedicated to improving the lives of fellow kidney patients and their families by helping them deal with the physical, emotional and social impact of kidney disease. The programs offered by AAKP inform and inspire patients and their families to better understand their condition, adjust more readily to their circumstances, and assume more normal, productive lives in their communities.
