American Red Cross Handles Millionth Emergency Call
The Armed Forces Emergency Services (AFES) Center of the American Red Cross got the call, and helped connect the soldier with his family. This month, the American Red Cross - the line of communication between service members and their families back home - received the millionth of such calls since the service began back on November 16, 1998.
In a unique system that keeps soldiers around the world in touch with their families wherever they are located, the Red Cross operates two call centers in the United States, one at Ft. Sill Army Base in Ft. Sill, Oklahoma, and the other at Red Cross National headquarters in Washington, D.C.
Service members are able to contact the Red Cross directly through a toll free number to learn or share information with their family back home. Red Cross chapters and call center employees verify the information and work with Red Cross representatives on military installations around the world to make sure the message is delivered. Confirmation then goes back to the family that the service member is aware of the situation.
