Antimicrobials In The Home Not Necessary, Canadian Paediatric Society

The use of antimicrobials in the home is not necessary, according to new recommendations from the Canadian Paediatric Society (CPS).

"Handwashing, using plain soap and water, is still the most important way to reduce the spread of germs," says Dr. Joanne Embree, a paediatric infectious disease specialist in Winnipeg and chair of the CPS Infectious Diseases and Immunization Committee. "Wash your hands after you cough or sneeze, and after being in contact with someone who has a cold or the flu."

Many products with antimicrobials are sold for home use. Common household cleaners such as hand soap and dishwashing liquid come in "antibacterial" forms, and many products are treated with antimicrobials, from toys to kitchen utensils. The new CPS position statement, published this week in Paediatrics & Child Health , provides information on the risks and benefits of using antimicrobials in the home and outlines appropriate home hygiene measures.

"You don't need to buy toys treated with antimicrobial products," adds Dr. Embree. "When children put toys in their mouths or play with them when they are sick, simply clean them with water and soap and rinse them well."

Additional recommendations include:

-- In general, a plain mild soap is fine.

-- Alcohol-based solutions or gels can be used to wash hands if regular soap and water are not available.

-- When someone in the home has diarrhea or is vomiting, wash your hands often, especially after changing diapers.

-- In the kitchen, handle food safely, wash your hands often and keep work areas clean.

The Canadian Paediatric Society is a national professional association, representing more than 2,200 paediatricians, that advocates for the health needs of children and youth.
