BMA Response To The Launch Of The Conservative Party's Consultation On Prison Reform
"The BMA welcomes the Conservative Party's decision to take a direct look at the serious problems facing English and Welsh prisons. We will carefully consider the detail in the Prisons with a Purpose consultation document before responding fully on behalf of our prison doctor members.
"It is important that any review of the prison system does not focus solely on prison capacity and sentencing policy. These are certainly important issues, especially as the overcrowded environment in many prisons is placing an intolerable strain on prison healthcare.
"However, building more prisons and tinkering with sentencing policy will not address this country's shamefully high rate of re-offending that currently results in two thirds of prisoners committing a crime within two years of release. The prison system desperately needs wide ranging action to re-invigorate under-funded and disorganised rehabilitation services that at present are not treating the six out of ten prisoners who enter custody addicted to drugs or the seven out of ten who have one or more mental health problems.
"All parties need to realise that the prison system is failing the public by releasing prisoners with potentially dangerous medical conditions that could represent a threat to themselves and society."
