Boom In Health Innovation Inspires NHS Institute And NESTA To Call For More

The NHS Institute for Innovation and Improvement and NESTA will this week challenge senior leaders in the NHS to create an environment in which more frontline NHS and social care staff are encouraged to come forward with their ideas for improving the health system.

The challenge, made during Innovation Live, a conference to explore and stimulate innovation in healthcare, comes alongside recent data from the NHS Institute that shows a real increase in the appetite for innovation in staff from all levels of the NHS. Figures from the NHS Institute's NHS Live network, a national learning network open to all NHS staff to share their ideas and best practice, show a 75 per cent increase in the number of frontline staff who've had ideas and want to work together to make them happen.

NESTA's work in social innovation has seen a similar trend, with 500 people applying to their Innovations in Mental Health call for ideas, and significant interest in Health Launchpad's incubation project for long term conditions. However, both organisations feel much more could be achieved if senior leaders created a culture that helped bring new, entrepreneurial ideas to the surface.

Bernard Crump, chief executive of the NHS Institute says: "At this time of economic uncertainty it is more important than ever to unlock the creativity of our workforce. We know there are bright people across the NHS who are sitting on great improvement ideas and we want these people to feel they can come forward, share them with their colleagues, and together, make them happen. Through some of the projects we have been involved in we have seen first hand what happens when staff and patients are engaged in improving their environment; the results can be outstanding".

According to Bernard, the NHS also needs to be more transparent about the challenges it's facing so that innovators can come up with solutions that directly address them.

Jonathan Kestenbaum, chief executive of NESTA says: "The challenge to find radical new solutions to today's pressing health issues has arrived. Now is the time for the UK to resist the conventional approaches to solving problems and open the doors to revolutionary new ideas. NESTA's work in this field is proving that some of the best insights and ideas are emerging from people on the frontline who, under the right conditions, can make a big impact."

Gill Hicks, survivor of the 7 July 2005 London bombings, founder of M.A.D. for Peace and former Head of Curation at the Design Council, who is speaking at the conference, says:

"I have seen with my own eyes what all of the staff in the health service can do when they are engaged and motivated to do great work. The people that cared for me, particularly the physiotherapists, showed great initiative and innovation in their approach. As a result I was able to walk out of St Thomas' three months after the bombings. It is to these people that I owe my life."

The NHS Institute and NESTA are working to provide frontline staff with the tools and opportunities to recognise where things could be improved and to stimulate innovative thinking around health issues and care. These include Thinking Differently, an NHS Institute toolkit designed to demonstrate how a different perspective can often help to make a revolutionary change to the way care is delivered, and NESTA's Challenge Programme, designed to stimulate, support and spread social innovation.

The Innovation Live conference aims to provide the context, inspiration, networks and resources required to generate and implement or adopt new ideas and demonstrates that it is as much about service innovation as it is about new technology. Open to anyone with an interest in transforming healthcare, it combines practical examples showing where and how innovation has made a real difference, with the latest thinking on how to develop and encourage innovation at all levels.
