Breast-Feeding Benefits Should Be Disseminated, But Women Who Formula-Feed Should Not Be Harshly Criticized, Editorial Says

Although "science comes down hard on behalf of educating women about the clear advantages of breast-feeding," it is "no license to imply that mothers who cannot breast-feed or choose not to are putting their babies in grave danger," a New York Times editorial says (New York Times, 7/2). An HHS campaign called "Healthy People 2010" aims to have 50% of women who delivered infants to continue breast-feeding for up to six months after delivery. The campaign has received criticism that it overstates the benefits of breast-feeding and could make women who cannot breast-feed, or who opt not to, feel ashamed and inadequate (Kaiser Daily Women's Health Policy Report, 6/13). The American Academy of Pediatrics has cited "strong evidence" that breast-feeding can reduce incidence of diarrhea, respiratory infections, ear infections and other infectious diseases in infants, according to the Times editorial. Thus, the "government is right to let out the word that, all things being equal," women should breast-feed, but experts "on both sides" of the issue agree there are "safe and nutritious" feeding formulas, the editorial says. Some women find breast-feeding "painful" and others have difficulty pumping milk at work, the editorial says, adding that society should "encourage employers" to provide adequate places for women to pump breast milk but people should not "houn[d] those who decide" not to breast-feed (New York Times, 7/2).
