Business Community Should Contribute To Health Care 'Conversation,' Opinion Piece States
"The business community needs to get out of its shell and be part of [the] conversation" about health care, which is "about to begin in Washington" as Democrats are set to assume the congressional majority, columnist Joe Nocera writes in a New York Times opinion piece. He cites a meeting held earlier this month between the CEOs of Ford, GM and Chrysler and President Bush at which the automakers "offered a litany of woes," including the high cost of health care, but "offered only one concrete idea" -- establishing a "presumably government-funded" insurance pool to cover employees and retirees with chronic illnesses. The idea is "hardly likely to warm the heart of a free-marketeer like the president," according to Nocera. He says that the "larger question" is "why so few people in American business have ideas about what to do about the health care problem," adding, "It is, after all, their burden." Nocera writes, "With the Democrats now in control of both houses of Congress, and the 2008 presidential race looming, it certainly would be useful if the business community had some ideas they could put on the table." Nocera concludes that "businesses can't stand on the sidelines anymore. This is a moment of opportunity far too precious to waste" (Nocera, New York Times, 11/18).
