Child-proof bottle tops aren't fooling inquisitive toddlers
At the start of Child Safety Week, the Child Accident Prevention Trust has said bottles and packs of colourful pills are a 'devil's sweetshop' for toddlers. It is urging parents to store these potentially dangerous products safely - high up, out of sight and preferably locked away.
Every year, 25,000 under-five-year-olds end up in casualty with suspected swallowing of substances ranging from medicines to cleaning products, and one in five are admitted to hospital for treatment. Common painkillers are the biggest culprits, responsible for one in four hospital admissions, and are often taken from handbags and bedside tables. Bleach or toilet cleaner left beside the toilet is to blame for many bathroom poisonings.
