Conference To Identify Key Characteristics Of RTs In The Future
The AARC will embark upon the first of three major conferences that will focus on the future development of the profession. The first conference will be held March 3-6 in Dallas. The endpoint: defining the Knowledge, Skills and Attributes (KSAs) needed by the respiratory therapist of the future.
"Creating a Vision for Respiratory Care in 2015 and Beyond" is the first in a series of conferences in which stakeholders in the profession-patients, doctors, administrators, government agencies, educational institutions- will define what those KSAs need to be for the future practitioner.
At the first conference participants will:
- examine the characteristics of the current healthcare delivery system and how it is likely to evolve as we move into the future.
- project what and how respiratory therapy services will be delivered in the future.
- identify the future roles and responsibilities of respiratory therapists.
That sets the stage for the second and third conferences to take place over the next two years, which will further refine the information and develop a road map for changes that need to take place in the educational, testing, and professional realms.
The conference is invitation-only and will be a structured series of presentations followed by discussions. Such topics as the future of general health care in the U.S., a review of what patients need, human resource considerations, the evolution of technology, disease management, among other subjects will be covered.
Participants come from the stakeholder community, representing employers and insurers, foundations, state and federal agencies, educational organizations, public and consumers, and accrediting and credentialing organizations, will provide insight into what they believe the therapist of the future must "look" like in order to optimize and bring value to the patient and health care system.
By synthesizing this information from the external marketplace and weighing the comments of these stakeholders, a document will be developed that identifies the KSAs of therapists five or more years into the future.
