Connecticut Announces $20 Million In Embryonic Stem Cell Research Grants

Connecticut recently announced it has awarded a total of $20 million to 21 human embryonic stem cell research projects beginning next year, the New York Times reports (Medina, New York Times, 12/10). Connecticut Gov. M. Jodi Rell (R) in June 2005 signed into law a measure (SB 934) that provides $100 million in state funding over 10 years for human embryonic stem cell research conducted in the state but bans human reproductive cloning and the sale of human eggs, sperm and embryos. The law established that a nine-member committee will administer grants in consultation with the commissioner of the state health department and also created a five-member Stem Cell Research Peer Review Board (Kaiser Daily Women's Health Policy Report, 5/11). The first round of grants under the measure will support research at the University of Connecticut, which received $12 million; Yale University; and Wesleyan University. More than 70 proposals were considered. According to the Times, Connecticut has moved faster than other states -- including California, New Jersey, Maryland and Illinois -- to finance stem cell research. "Certainly we put an emphasis on research that cannot or is not being done elsewhere, which means embryonic stem cells," J. Robert Galvin, commissioner of the Connecticut Department of Public Health and chair of the stem cell advisory board, said (New York Times, 12/10).
