Dignity In Dying Statement: 'Mercy Killer' Walks Free, UK

On Friday, Alison Bird, 45, walked free from court after assisting the suicide of a family friend, because she acted out of "love and affection". (Daily Telegraph, 12/01/08, p16; Daily Express, 12/01/08, p35).

Dignity in Dying, the UK's leading organisation campaigning for the legislation of assisted dying in the UK, provided the following statement on this case.

Sarah Wootton, Chief Executive of Dignity in Dying, said:

"The judge's verdict further demonstrates the unnacceptable current state of the law in the UK.

"Any form of assisted dying is currently illegal, yet many judges sympathise with people's actions which are reflected in their verdicts. However, without proper legislation in place, both the patient and their loved ones are in vulnerable positions. Legislation of medically assisted dying for terminally ill adults who are suffering unbearably would ensure that people faced with such a scenario are protected by sufficient safeguards.

"The current law is confused and does little to help people at the end of their lives. It common sense that the law needs to be clarified and, ultimately, changed."
