Disabled people receiving inadequate healthcare, UK
Paul Holmes, speaking at a Fringe meeting during the Liberal Democrat's annual conference, said that the high level of health inequality was a result of the limited training in providing care for the disabled.
Mr Holmes pointed out that although 17 per cent of the UK population have disabilities, nearly 75 per cent of GPs have no formal training on how to deal with people who may have learning disabilities.
Jane Campbell, a Commissioner at the Disability Rights Commission, also told the meeting that there is a real need to improve the level of equality for disabled people within the NHS and that many people are excluded from receiving an adequate standard of care.
The meeting was also attended by representatives from the Disability Rights Commission, MENCAP and the Kings fund.
