Dr. David Granstrom To Lead AVMA Education And Research Division

As part of its ongoing efforts to maintain and enhance the quality of the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) education accreditation programs and research, the AVMA has hired Dr. David Granstrom as director of the Education and Research Division.

"Dave is a former Assistant Director in this Division (1997-2001) and is currently an Associate Director at USDA's Agricultural Research Service in Beltsville, Md. He has an impressive background in practice, academia, research, private business, and government," said W. Ron DeHaven, executive vice president of the AVMA. "Dave's broad base of experience and knowledge of AVMA will serve him very well as our new Division Director."

Dr. Granstrom's responsibilities will include overseeing and formulating the association's policies, objectives and programs concerning education, research, accreditation, certification of graduates of foreign colleges of veterinary medicine, and veterinary medical specialties. This is an important year for the Education and Research Division, as its veterinary education accreditation process was one of five strategic goals for the 2007-2008 year.

"It is a great privilege to apply the training and experience gained throughout my career to help address the educational and research demands facing the profession," Dr. Granstrom said. "It is difficult to imagine anything more important to the profession than ensuring the transfer of new and existing knowledge to the next generation of veterinarians. I welcome the opportunity to serve the profession in this critical capacity. My primary goal is to work collaboratively with stakeholders and AVMA staff to help ensure a bright future for the profession and those we serve."

Dr. Granstrom is returning to the AVMA after serving as associate director at the Animal and Natural Resources Institute at the USDA from 2001. Prior to his work at the USDA, he was an assistant director at the AVMA Education and Research Division from 1997-2001. He also worked as associate professor of parasitology at the Maxwell H. Gluck Equine Research Center at the University of Kentucky from 1988-1997. He served 21 years as a public health officer with the Air National Guard in Kansas and Kentucky, retiring at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in 2005.

Dr. Granstrom received his doctor of veterinary medicine degree in 1978 from the College of Veterinary Medicine at Kansas State University. He owned and operated a solo mixed practice for five years before returning to Kansas State to earn a Ph.D. in parasitology in 1988.
