FDA Approves Breast Cancer Screening Device In Combination With Tumor Suppressor Biomarker
TriPath Imaging and Ventana Medical Systems on Thursday announced that FDA has approved the companies' new breast cancer screening device in combination with p53 -- a biomarker that suppresses tumors and is used in cancer diagnosis -- Reuters reports (Reuters, 10/12). The device, called the Ventana Image Analysis System, when used with tissues stained with p53 can take precise measurements of the biomarker in breast biopsy samples, according to TriPath. This is the first time FDA has approved a p53 marker for use in an image analysis system, the company said. Several other biomarkers have been approved by FDA for use with the system, the AP/Yahoo! News reports (AP/Yahoo! News, 10/12).
