Florida House Rejects Proposal To Tie Employee Health Benefits To Tax Incentives
The Florida House on Tuesday rejected a proposal to require companies to offer health benefits if they receive tax dollars to move to the state, the AP/Bradenton Herald reports. The proposal was included in a bill (SB 2728) that would generate economic incentives for companies bringing high-paying scientific jobs to Florida. The bill, which has already passed in the Senate, would establish a $250 million fund to entice high-tech research and development businesses to move to the state through tax breaks and other incentives. Democrats argued that if businesses moving to the state are going to receive tax credits, they should pay for their employees' health coverage. In the past, some companies that have received tax breaks after moving to Florida "have given us Medicaid patients," State Rep. Susan Bucher (D), said. State Rep. Frank Atkisson (R), sponsor of the bill, argued that the requirement would discourage companies from taking advantage of the tax credits. The health requirement proposal was rejected on a party-line vote, 83-55. The state House is expected to pass the bill soon, after which it will be returned to the state Senate for additional consideration (Royse, AP/Bradenton Herald, 5/2).
