GMCtoday January/February 2008 Issue Is Published, UK

As the GMC publishes its first issue of GMCtoday for 2008, we highlight some of the successes of 2007, look forward to plans for 2008 (including the implications of the Health and Social Care Bill), and introduce three doctors who have taken a less conventional route to medicine.

And for my next career…

Not all doctors come straight from medical school; in fact more and more doctors today have already had pretty gruelling careers outside medicine. Three students from Swansea University School of Medicine, a journalist, a soldier and a city banker spoke to GMCtoday about their decisions to make the leap from their successful careers to study medicine.

Ben Chisholme, 32, had worked for nine years as a journalist for the BBC when he spent some time with a relative during the last few months of their life. 'I saw what went on and thought "I think I could do that". I also discovered how satisfying it was to help someone through their illness. I had always wished that I had studied medicine but I thought I'd missed my chance. I came across graduate-entry medicine on the NHS careers website; I hadn't missed my chance after all, and suddenly everything made sense. The hardest part was making the decision.'

Ex-army officer Will Kenyon was a soldier between 1999 and 2006 before taking the plunge into medicine. Will, now 29, said, 'in my old job, you learnt how to make holes in people. In my new role, you learn how to fix them!' Of his decision to switch careers, he said, 'I'm nearly 30, I've been around the block and I know what I want to do now, whereas at 18 I didn't.'

Katie Burlington worked for Barclays Corporate before applying for medicine. She says, 'I'm always keen for a challenge, and in my eyes medicine is the ultimate challenge… I'm very much looking forward to 1st August 2010, my first day as Dr Burlington.'
