Group That Opposes Abortion Supports Pregnant Teacher Who Was Fired From Catholic School For Having Premarital Sex
The group Feminists for Life, which opposes abortion, is siding with a former teacher at a Catholic school in Queens, N.Y., saying the school's decision to fire her for engaging in premarital sex, which resulted in pregnancy, encourages abortion, ABC News.com reports (Tapper/Miller, ABC News.com, 2/20). Michelle McCusker started work as a pre-kindergarten teacher at St. Rose of Lima School in September 2005, according to court documents. Although her teaching contract was for one year, McCusker was fired in October 2005 when she informed the principal that she was pregnant and she intended to carry the pregnancy to term. In November 2005, McCusker and the New York Civil Liberties Union filed a lawsuit, alleging that the school treated her differently from men who have children out of wedlock. Serrin Foster, president of Feminists for Life, said, "When an employer fires a woman for carrying a child to term, they send an unintended message: An abortion will cover up the sex" (Feminists for Life release, 2/21). According to ABC News.com, past rulings might work against McCusker, including a decision last week by an Alabama judge to uphold the firing of a teacher from a Christian school because she had premarital sex, which resulted in pregnancy. The school had argued that the pregnancy had not played a role in the decision to fire the teacher, ABC News.com reports (ABC News.com, 2/20).
