HHS Official Resigns, Will Take Position At Wal-Mart

John Agwunobi has resigned as HHS assistant secretary of health and will take a position at Wal-Mart managing the company's pharmacies, vision centers and health clinics, CQ HealthBeat reports. HHS Secretary Mike Leavitt expressed regret about the departure and commended Agwunobi's efforts on preparing for a potential flu pandemic and emphasizing healthy lifestyles for U.S. residents.

Georges Benjamin, executive director of the American Public Health Association, said Agwunobi "was strong on prevention and strong on preparedness." The Sept. 4 departure will leave the two highest federal public health posts -- Agwunobi's position and that of U.S. Surgeon General -- vacant, according to Richard Hamburg, director of government relations at Trust for America's Health. Hamburg added that both posts "are somewhat unlikely to be filled during the rest of the Bush administration" (Reichard, CQ HealthBeat, 8/7).
