Health Warning For Returnee Hajj Pilgrims, UK
This disease often starts with flu-like symptoms - fever, vomiting, cold hands and feet, shivering and limb, joint and muscle pain. Severe headache, stiff neck and dislike of bright lights may also be present as well as a rash which could appear anywhere on the body.
"Meningitis is a well known notorious killer disease. It is highly infectious and rapidly spreads from one person to another. The mortality rate is very high and those few who manage to survive through most intensive hospital treatment often end up with all the miserable sequelae like damage to the brain, kidneys, lungs and the limbs etc. Sadly, their quality of life is very poor indeed… In recent years, over 20 British pilgrims have lost their lives due to meningitis outbreak", said the senior doctors in their joint statement.
The senior doctors are also reminding the returnee pilgrims that if they have suffered any ailment during the Hajj then they must visit their GP and seek medical assistance to ensure to eliminate the risk of the spread of any infectious disease amongst their families and the community.
