He added:
"For the last three years, the BMA has been shouting from the rooftops about its concerns regarding ISTCs. We have been worried about their effect on local hospital economies, about the vast amount of money being squandered in setting them up rather than investing these much needed funds in the NHS and about the lack of any real systemic assessment of their effectiveness.
"I am delighted that the Health Committee, having taken detailed evidence from all parties, agrees with the BMA that ISTCs may not offer better value than NHS Treatment Centres, and that NHS Hospitals are more likely to give better integrated care and to be cheaper. The Health Committee concurs that ISTCs have made little difference to NHS capacity and the fall in waiting lists is likely to be a result of increased NHS spending. I am particularly pleased to see the Committee agrees that the Department of Health needs to go further in enabling NHS doctors to work and train in ISTCs, as I believe this will benefit standards and integration of patient care.
"The Health Committee is absolutely right to question the wisdom of further investment in ISTCs and to worry that they will destabilise NHS Trusts. This report echoes so many of our long-standing concerns. If only the government had listened to us in the beginning and re-thought their plans. I hope that this report acts as a catalyst and encourages the government not to sign any more deals with private providers."
