International Lung Cancer Conference, Liverpool - 9-12 July 2008
Professor John Field, Director of Research at Roy Castle Lung Cancer Research Programme, University of Liverpool Cancer Research Centre, has been the driving force behind previous workshops held in the city and seeks to use the Liverpool conference in 2008 to publicise Liverpool's expertise in the area of lung cancer research, to develop international clinical and scientific partnerships and to expand the broader objectives of cancer research.
Speaking about the conference in Liverpool Professor Field said "the 2008 Conference will be the largest lung cancer meeting in the UK and it has already attracted major international speakers who will present state of the art research areas in lung cancer".
The conference has been planned to provide an insight into the state of the art early detection techniques which includes molecular biomarkers and low dose CT imaging technologies. The status of current and future lung cancer screening clinical trials will be presented in the specialist "Liverpool City of Culture Symposium" session.
Lung cancer research has focused on a number of new targeted therapies and a great deal of research has been undertaken on understanding the molecular-pathology pathways associated with these therapies in order to improve these interventions.
There are specific sessions which will deal with the burden of the disease internationally as well as the advances in smoking cessation policies worldwide. It is also vital that lung cancer patients are informed about possible therapies and will be the subject of the Patient Advocacy session.
An overview of the Advances in Lung Cancer clinical trials in the UK, Europe and the USA will be given by invited experts in the plenary sessions and mini-symposia. Opportunities for international scientists and clinicians will also be provided to discuss their own research in oral and poster sessions.
There are also 'Meet the Professor' educational sessions, which are designed for clinicians in training and those who want updates on; clinical trial design, radiotherapy treatment, mesothelioma trials and the new staging system in lung cancer.
In summary, the international lung cancer conference will provide excellent opportunities for clinical and basic science researchers to hear first hand about the cutting edge advances in clinical trials, early lung cancer detection and CT imaging, developing therapeutics and emerging molecular diagnostics.

The proceedings of the ILCCL 2008 will be published in the Journal of Thoracic Oncology.
Around 500 delegates will be in attendance at the Conference which will focus on how to diagnose early lung cancer and find a cure for the UK's biggest cancer killer.
