Los Angeles Times Examines CDC's 'Preconception Care' Recommendations
The Los Angeles Times on Monday examined CDC's "preconception care" recommendations -- published in the April 21 edition of the agency's Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report -- that encourage women to maintain physical and emotional health before becoming pregnant (Ulene, Los Angeles Times, 6/5). Preconception care includes the recommendation that all women who are between their first menstrual period and menopause take supplements of folic acid, maintain a healthy weight, refrain from smoking and keep chronic conditions under control. The goal of CDC's recommendations is to make preconception care -- which involves developing a reproductive health plan for women, and clarifies when and if there are plans for pregnancy -- a common practice for all women (Kaiser Daily Women's Health Policy Report, 5/16). According to the Times, the recommendations emphasize the importance of "individual responsibility," encouraging women and men to have a "reproductive life plan." Peter Bernstein of Montefiore Medical Center in New York, who was a member of the CDC panel that developed the recommendations, said, "Pregnancy planning and care should begin months before a couple tries to conceive," adding, "Every pregnancy should be a planned pregnancy" (Los Angeles Times, 6/5).
