MRC Appoints New Head Of Technology Transfer Company, UK
Sir Leszek Borysiewicz, Chief Executive of the Medical Research Council said: "Dr Tapolczay's appointment comes at a time of great focus on the application and translation of MRC research. MRC Technology commercialises and licences discoveries by MRC scientists. I'm sure Dr Tapolczay will help us to translate our scientific discoveries into new treatments and technologies as swiftly as possible. This will allow us to plough our licensing income into research. This appointment is great news for UK plc."
Dr Tapolczay said: "The task of identifying, nurturing and aiding the commercialisation of the work of thousands of scientists spread across the UK is a daunting one, but one which I am looking forward to as my new challenge. A greater focus on technology transfer and speeding up the discovery development pipeline has really placed a spotlight on the work of MRCT. The MRC has an astonishing record of achievement, from monoclonal antibodies to a HPV vaccine for cervical cancer."
MRCT's work extends beyond patenting and licensing operations to enabling research in its own state-of-the-art laboratories based at the National Institute for Medical Research in north London. These will be relocated to the proposed UK Centre for Medical Research and Innovation, due to open in central London in 2013. There, scientists will continue to carry out applied research, including drug discovery work, to take forward findings at the molecular level made by scientists working in MRC units. MRCT also works with pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies on collaborative research programmes. And it runs an ongoing programme of showcase events with MRC to support and promote collaboration between MRC scientists and industry.
Dr Tapolczay has widespread experience in larger pharmaceutical companies and smaller biotech research laboratories as well as technology transfer groups around the UK and the USA. He was previously Vice President, Technology Development at GSK Pharmaceuticals and CEO of StylaCats and Pharmophix. He also has good links to the academic world, particularly in chemistry where he has acted as a consultant.
Nick Winterton, chair of the MRCT board and Executive Director of the MRC said: He added: "His experience in evaluating technologies with the power to affect the drug discovery timeframe, reviewing and reshaping companies intellectual property portfolios, managing large scientific teams and constructing business plans for both small and large companies will be central to successfully heading MRCT."
