Medical-Surgical Nurses Will Network, Be Nurtured At Academy Of Medical-Surgical Nurses Convention - October 24-29, 2007, Las Vegas, NV
Nurses, clinical nurse specialists, educators, managers, administrators, students, researchers and nurse practitioners from hospital, community and long-term care facilities will attend.
Participants will have an opportunity to attend workshops and education sessions on such topics as post-operative care, diabetes, patient safety, end-of-life care, pharmacology, community-acquired illnesses, caring for bariatric patients and pain management.
Attendees will also be able to earn Continuing Education (CE) credits, network with colleagues, visit with vendors in the exhibit hall and view poster presentations. A complete registration brochure is available on AMSN's Web site, www.medsurgnurse.org, click on "Events."
Program
Three pre-convention workshops will be offered on Wednesday, October 24, and Thursday, October 25. The two-day Medical-Surgical Nursing Certification Review Course and Overview will prepare candidates for the Certified Medical-Surgical Registered Nurse (CMSRN) certification exam. In the Research Workshop, attendees will learn how to successfully disseminate nursing research. The Clinical Leadership Workshop will discuss leadership skills that participants can use at the bedside or in a traditional leadership role.
Later on Thursday, keynote speaker LeAnn Thieman, CSP, will uplift and honor nurses in her address, "Chicken Soup for the Nurse's Soul." Thieman will share stories from the Chicken Soup book and from her 35-year nursing career to inspire her colleagues and remind them to care for themselves as they care for others.
Concurrent sessions will run from Friday, October 26, through Sunday, October 28. Topics include:
-- Identifying patients at risk for bone disease
-- Managing psychiatric patients on the medical-surgical unit
-- Community-acquired MRSA
-- Myths about urinary incontinence
-- Using Healing Touch as part of the care plan
-- Medical-surgical nursing in the military
-- Use of maggots and leeches in medical treatments
On Sunday, October 28, Diana E. Anderson, BSN, RN, CMSRN, and Jayne Simms, MSN, RN, will close the conference with their session "Celebrating the Specialty of Medical-Surgical Nursing."
Town Hall
The Town Hall meeting, which provides an opportunity for attendees to discuss issues affecting nursing, will be held on Sunday, October 28. This year's meeting, "Nursing Image: The Past, Present and the Impact on the Future," will focus on the many transformations nursing has experienced and what nurses and organizations are doing to support and protect the professional nursing image.
Certification Exam
The Medical-Surgical Nursing Certification Board (MSNCB) will offer a post-convention Certified Medical-Surgical Registered Nurse (CMSRN) certification exam on Monday, October 29, at the Las Vegas Hilton. A separate application and registration fee are required for the exam. To download an application, visit http://www.medsurgnurse.org/cert. The application deadline is September 3, 2007.
Continuing Education
Attendees can earn up to 18.75 contact hours of continuing nursing education during the convention, plus an additional 13.75 contact hours for the two-day Medical-Surgical Nursing Certification Review Course and Overview, and 5.0 contact hours each for the Research and Clinical Leadership Workshops. Reviewing the posters in the exhibit hall will also provide at least 1.0 contact hour.
