Miami Herald Examines Private Florida Funds That Avoid Publicity for Helping Provide Abortions for Low-Income Women
The Miami Herald on Thursday examined how 10 private, not-for-profit funds in Florida that raise money to underwrite abortions for women who cannot afford the procedure try to keep "low profiles." The funds establish relationships with abortion providers and conduct outreach to public health departments, community centers and clinics to raise money and assist low-income women who wish to access abortion services, according to M.J. Maccardini, executive director of the National Network of Abortion Funds. However, the groups and advocates involved "are mindful of avoiding protests that might disrupt their work" and often find themselves in the "dicey position" of trying to raise money "while flying below antiabortion activists' radar," according to the Herald (Brecher, Miami Herald, 5/12).
