Minority Women Less Likely Than White Women To Receive Mammograms, Study Finds
Minority women are less likely to receive mammograms than white women, according to a study published on April 18 in the Annals of Internal Medicine, Knight Ridder/Charlotte Observer reports. For the study, led by University of California-San Francisco radiologist Rebecca Smith-Bindman, researchers examined the medical records of more than one million women ages 40 and older who had received mammograms between 1996 and 2000 from seven mammography registries -- Colorado, New Hampshire, New Mexico, North Carolina, San Francisco, Seattle and Vermont. More than 17,550 study participants were diagnosed with breast cancer. According to the study, black women, Latino women, Asian women and Native American women were less likely than white women to receive mammograms annually or biannually as recommended. About 72% of white women received mammograms as recommended, compared with between 63% and 68% of minority women, the study finds. In addition, the study finds that minority women were more likely than white women to receive their first mammogram because of the results of a physical examination or breast cancer symptoms. The study also finds that 18% of white women with breast cancer did not receive mammograms as recommended, compared with 35% of black women. Although Asian and Native American women were less likely than white women to receive mammograms as recommended, they had significantly lower rates of cancer and had lower rates of large, advanced-stage tumors, the study finds. Implications
The study marks the first to "directly link the pattern of how regularly a woman gets a mammogram with the stage of her tumors at the time she's diagnosed," Knight Ridder/Observer reports. Researchers hope that the study will lead to increased mammograms for minority women. "I think we've been a little complacent because we thought disparity was no longer a persistent issue," Smith-Bindman said (Wronge, Knight Ridder/Charlotte Observer, 4/22).
