More Employers Establish Wellness Programs To Help Reduce Health Care Costs

Two newspapers on Monday published articles that examine the growing trend of employer-sponsored fitness and wellness programs established to improve employee health and reduce future health care costs. Summaries appear below.Los Angeles Times: Insurers and self-insured employers nationwide "are creating programs that employ 'health coaches,'" health professionals who "help employees manage illnesses and lifestyle issues," in an effort to reign in health care costs, the Los Angeles Times reports. Coaches use claims data to find employees who have, or are at risk for, chronic illnesses such as asthma, diabetes and cancer. The coaches contact workers to offer informational brochures and tips for remembering to take medication. They also help employees find a doctor or clinical trial for a specific condition (Kritz, Los Angeles Times, 11/20).

Philadelphia Inquirer: More companies are offering their employees fitness programs, health fairs and financial incentives for healthy lifestyles, "hoping they can offset ever-increasing health insurance costs by keeping employees healthy and stress-free," the Philadelphia Inquirer reports. According to an annual survey by Mercer Human Resource Consulting LLC, about 71% of employers consider such programs a "significant" strategy in controlling costs over the next five years (Von Bergen, Philadelphia Inquirer, 11/20).
