NHS Lagging Behind With IT, Says MS Trust, UK
Technology in the NHS argues that the NHS has been slow to incorporate the level of technology that people are beginning to expect from other services. It suggests that email and the internet could play a bigger part in NHS services by allowing people to book GP appointments, receive routine test results, view their medical records or have online consultations.
The report points out that in an age where internet users regularly use online shopping and banking, the NHS is tending to lag behind users' expectations.
Co-author Alasdair Liddell, senior associate at The King's Fund, said: "Consumers are accustomed to using technology in their daily lives, yet new technologies, and even basic ones, are not embedded in the health service. The NHS must commit to improving the patient experience - this will require an understanding of why useful technology is not being adopted and a determination to overcome these barriers."
The Kings Fund report echoes the work of Prof Deborah Miller of the Mellen Center for MS in Cleveland Ohio. Prof Miller will be speaking at the MS Trust's Conference this weekend about the Mellen Center Care On Line (MCCO) scheme. This is an internet based self management program that allows users to monitor their MS symptoms, make decisions about important changes, and communicate in a secure, electronic way with their MS team.
The MS Trust conference is the largest UK meeting for health and social care professionals working with people with MS. A report on the conference will appear on the Conference pages after the event.
