NHS Wales Chief Executive Ann Lloyd To Retire In March

NHS Wales Chief Executive Ann Lloyd has confirmed that she will retire at the end of March 2009 after serving the Welsh Assembly Government in this key role for eight years.

She will step aside from her current job as Head of the NHS in Wales in December to lead a major project on tackling waiting times for hospital appointments and treatments. Ann Lloyd was appointed in February 2001 as chief adviser to the Welsh Assembly Government on healthcare matters and with direct accountability for the running of the NHS in Wales.

First Minister Rhodri Morgan has paid tribute to Ann Lloyd for the massive contribution she has made to the health service in Wales. He said: "Ann has been an outstanding manager of the NHS in Wales through a period of unprecedented change and her contribution to creating better health in Wales has been immense. She has been a hands-on kind of leader of the NHS and I have worked closely with her on improving the health of the people of Wales during almost all of my time as First Minister.

"We have an NHS to be proud of in Wales and Ann has been a major factor in its modernisation and improvement. I would like to express my thanks to her and wish her well in her retirement."

Health Minister Edwina Hart said: "Ann has led the first phase of the restructuring of the NHS in Wales which will see the end of the internal market and the creation of seven new NHS Local bodies to replace the existing structure of NHS Trusts and 22 Local Health Boards. Her retirement coincides with the start of the next phase in our restructuring of the NHS which means that her successor will be in place in time to see through the changes to the final stage.

"I am pleased she has agreed to spend her last few months with the Welsh Assembly Government tackling waiting times - one of the thorniest issues we have faced as a government."

Paul Williams, Chief Executive of the Abertawe Bro Morgannwg Trust will be seconded to the Welsh Assembly Government for up to two years to lead the service through NHS restructuring. He will take up his new position on 1st December. Health Minister Edwina Hart described Mr Williams as one of the most respected health service managers in the UK with a proven track record in running one of Wales' most efficient NHS trusts.
