NPR Reports on 'Important Implications' of Growing Long-Term Care Costs for Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid

The "mostly invisible" issue of increasing long-term care costs has "important implications" for discussions about Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid, NPR's... "Morning Edition" reports. According to NPR, spending on long-term care totaled about $140 billion in 2002 and expenses are expected to increase as the baby boomers age. Gov. Mark Warner (D-Va.), National Governors Association chair, said that long-term care is covered by Medicaid for more than 60% of all U.S. residents in nursing homes. In addition, people who are elderly and disabled represented slightly more than one-quarter of Medicaid beneficiaries in 2004, but their care accounted for more than 70% of Medicaid spending, NPR reports. Rep. Bill Thomas (R-Calif.), chair of the House Ways and Means Committee, said that the "major reason" for the "shortfall" in the Social Security system for U.S. residents older than age 75 is that "society has not successfully addressed chronic or long-term care needs." Thomas added that he is encouraging his colleagues to focus on long-term care, which he said is "totally related" to Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid. The NPR segment also includes comments from John Rother, policy director for AARP (Rovner, "Morning Edition," NPR, 3/1).

The complete segment is available online in RealPlayer.
