NY Times Examines Folic Acid Levels During Pregnancy To Protect Against Neural Tube Defects

The New York Times on Tuesday examined how adequate levels of folic acid among pregnant women, especially during conception and the first three months' gestation, can protect against neural tube defects in infants. Since about half of all pregnancies in the U.S. are unplanned and neural tube development occurs three to four weeks after conception -- before many women know they are pregnant -- women of childbearing age should act to increase their blood levels of folic acid to prevent the defects, according to the Times. Scientists are unsure exactly how folic acid helps neural tube development in a fetus, but to prevent defects, they recommend a daily supplement of 400 micrograms of folic acid, beginning before a woman becomes pregnant. Neural tube defects, which are among the most common serious birth defects, affect about 4,000 pregnancies annually in the U.S., about 1,500 of which are spontaneously or purposefully terminated as a result. Decline in Defects Detected Among Hispanics, Non-Hispanic Whites, Study Says
The annual number of neural tube defects in the U.S. declined by about half between 1995 and 2002, with significant declines among Hispanics and non-Hispanic whites, according to a study published in the September issue of Pediatrics, the Times reports. Laura Williams of CDC's National Center on Birth Defects and Developmental Disabilities and colleagues studied data from surveillance systems in 21 states and found that non-Hispanic blacks also experienced a decline in the number of neural tube defects, but it was not statistically significant. In an accompanying commentary, Robert L. Brent, a pediatric research physician, and Godfrey P. Oakley, Jr., a professor of epidemiology, say that the U.S. continues to face an "unnecessary epidemic" of neural tube defects because the level at which FDA requires the fortification of enriched grain products with folic acid is set too low (Brody, New York Times, 9/13).
