NY Times Examines Role Of Crisis Pregnancy Centers, Christian Support Groups, Adoption Services In Antiabortion Movement

The New York Times on Monday examined the "quiet" role of Christian support groups, crisis pregnancy centers and adoption ministries in the antiabortion movement and how they have remained "far from the public battles over abortion laws" compared with political organizations and protesters but are equally as "passionate and far-reaching." James Kelly -- a professor of sociology at Fordham University in New York who has written about the history of abortion in the U.S. -- said, "The media attention has all gone to the political wing. ... But the first national organizations in the movement were not political; they were service groups that provided direct aid to women so they" would choose not to undergo abortion. These service groups are "low-key" and "hidden" but always have had more volunteers than the political antiabortion movement, according to Kelly. About 2,300 to 3,500 crisis pregnancy centers exist nationwide, compared with 1,800 abortion providers, the Times reports. A Woman's Choice Resource Center in Kentucky, which is linked to the largest church in the state, is part of a national network of crisis pregnancy centers and postabortion groups that provide overseas adoption services, five-week counseling programs, ultrasound testing and literature that "emphasiz[es] what they say are the harmful effects of abortion," according to the Times.. A Woman's Choice tells women considering abortion that the procedure is damaging, both psychologically and physically, and that God provides for their children, while, in the short term, the center provides necessary supplies. Becky Edmondson, the center's executive director, said, "We're concerned, we read, we vote, but we're busy taking care of the families that come in," adding, "When these girls hear protesters say, 'You're killing your baby,' they say, 'You're not thinking about me, it's just the baby.' Whether they abort or have their children, we love them" (Leland, New York Times, 1/16).
