New Chairman for BMA Pensions Committee, UK

He take office at a crucial time for NHS pensions with a major NHS Pension Scheme Review underway and Government proposals to revise the official retirement age from 60 to 65 years.
Dr Dearden has been a member of the BMA Pensions Committee for the past two years. As a negotiator for the Association's General Practitioners Committee, he has been actively working on the pensions aspect of the new GP contract for the past three years.
"I am excited to be taking over this important role at such a vital time. The outcome of the Government's review will have long term effects on the pensions of all doctors. We have been working hard both with Government and the other unions affected to make this review work for NHS doctors and staff," he said. Dr Dearden is well known for his ability to take complex issues and present them in an understandable way.
He takes over from Dr Simon Fradd who was the preceding chairman of the BMA Pensions Committee (formerly Superannuation Committee). The BMA is opposed to the Government's proposals to increase the retirement age to 65 years.
