New Device Fuels Heart Engine
University of Alabama researchers are enrolling patients to investigate a new implantable device to help the heart. Called the Optimizer, it delivers non-excitatory electrical impulses to the heart for treatment of moderate to severe heart failure. Pacemakers and implantable defibrillators regulate heart pace, but the Optimizer delivers pulses that change how heart cells handle calcium.
"What we hope to find is that by stimulating more calcium release into the cell, the strength of heart contractions will increase, since calcium is the electrolyte that allows the heart to contract," said Jose A. Tallaj, M.D., cardiologist and lead investigator of UAB's portion of the 50-site clinical trial sponsored by the device manufacturer, Impulse Dynamics.
