New York Times Editorial Questions High Price Of Cancer Medication Avastin
"The high price charged for Avastin, a drug that has proved moderately effective against colon cancer and is about to be used against breast and lung cancer, seems hard to justify on any ground other than maximum profit for its maker," a New York Times editorial states. According to the editorial, the high price of Avastin, established by Genentech and Roche, "is a sign of how the rising cost of new life-extending drugs may affect American health care unless ways are found to mitigate the trend." The editorial adds, "The manufacturers go beyond the standard argument that high prices are needed to recoup research costs and add a new twist: the price reflects the value of this medicine to society." However, according to the editorial, that argument is "surely debatable" because the improvement that Avastin provides over current treatments appears "modest." The editorial states, "This is not a miracle drug, bringing huge benefits to society. The high price seems to have been imposed mostly because the companies figured the market would bear it." The editorial concludes, "Drug costs are still a relatively small part of the nation's health bill, but if extra-high prices become common, Congress may need to grant Medicare more power to push them down, and private plans will need to find ways to rein in the spending" (New York Times, 2/17).
