PAHO Launches "Safe Surgery Saves Lives" - 2nd WHO Global Patient Safety Challenge

What: The World Health Organization (WHO) will launch its new global initiative "Safe Surgery Saves Lives," aimed at improving the safety of surgery in countries around the world.

When: Wednesday, June 25, 2008, 11:45 a.m. to 2:45 p.m.
(Registration begins at 11:45 a.m. A light lunch will be served before the main event starts at 12:30 p.m.)

Where: Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) headquarters at 525 23rd St. N.W., Washington, D.C.

Who:

- Dr. Mirta Roses, Director of PAHO, WHO Regional Office for the Americas
- Sir Liam Donaldson, Chief Medical Officer of the U.K. and Chair of the WHO World Alliance for Patient Safety
- Dr. Atul Gawande, leader of the "Safe Surgery Saves Lives" initiative. Also associate director of the Center for Surgery and Public Health at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston and associate professor at the Harvard Medical School and Harvard School of Public Health
- Ms. Susan Sheridan, leader of the "Patients for Patient Safety" program of the World Alliance for Patient Safety and cofounder of Consumers Advancing Patient Safety

Why: Surgery is an essential, life-saving element of health care, but its recent rapid growth has had major consequences for public health. Research shows that a significant percentage of operations worldwide result in disabilities and deaths that could be prevented through consistent adherence to basic standards of care.

The Safe Surgery Saves Lives initiative provides strategies and tools for reducing the rising incidence of complications from surgery, by:

- Mobilizing professional endorsements for safer surgical care
- Disseminating a "WHO Surgical Safety Checklist"
- Defining measures for better tracking of surgeries, complications and mortality

The 2nd Global Patient Safety Challenge is an initiative of WHO's World Alliance for Patient Safety. For more information visit here.

PAHO, founded in 1902, works with all the countries of the Americas to improve the health and quality of life of their peoples. It also serves as the Regional Office for the Americas of the World Health Organization (WHO).
