Patient Information Awards at the BMA Medical Book Competition 2005

Two cutting edge resources aimed at directly enhancing patients' knowledge have won a competitive contest for the BMA Patient Information Book and Website Awards 2005. They separately cover the areas of HIV/AIDS and Lymphomas.

The BMA Patient Information Website Award has been won by Avert, an international HIV and AIDS charity based in the UK that attracts 100,000 visitors a week to its winning website - http://www.avert.org.uk. The website was praised by judges as "very well referenced, information rich and possessing a clean look".

Averts director, Ms Annabel Kanabus, said:

"We are very proud to receive this award, especially as it comes almost ten years to the day since our website was launched. The website has changed a lot technically in the last decade, but it's central aim remains the same: to provide accessible information focused on stemming the spread of HIV/AIDS in the UK and globally. It has not always been an easy task as we are a charity, but we do feel we provide a valuable service in this difficult area"

The BMA Patient Information Award for Websites was founded in 1998 to acknowledge the increasing importance of patient sites on the internet and this year attracted 20 entries.

The other major BMA Patient Information Award covers Printed Material and has been won by the Lymphoma Association for their publication Lymphoma.

Aimed at people affected by Hodgkin lymphoma or non-Hodgkin lymphoma, the book was praised by it's reviewer as "the best single source of information on lymphomas written for the public that I have come across".

The Lymphoma Association's Head of Publications¸ Ms Linsay Jennings said:

"Our main aim is to help people conquer the fear that lymphoma provokes by providing clear and understandable information through our helplines, support networks or in this case, our publications. We are delighted that this award recognises the efforts of many who work to achieve this aim".

Now in its ninth year, the BMA Patient information Award for Printed Materials was established in 1997 to encourage excellence in the production of patient information. Interest in the award has continued to grow and this year 35 awards were made from a total entry of 223 booklets.

Professor Dame Barbara Clayton, Honorary Research Professor in Metabolism at the University of Southampton, presented the awards at a ceremony at BMA House in London on Wednesday 2 November 2005.

The BMA Medical Book competition has been held annually since 1994 by the BMA's Board of Science and administered by the BMA Library. It aims to encourage and reward excellence in medical publishing, patient information and medical journalism.

All entries are individually reviewed and appraised by doctors and educators who are interested in medical publishing.

This year the BMA Book Competition overall drew 619 entries - 20 per cent higher than last year. Altogether, 23 first prizes and 74 highly commended awards were distributed by the judges.
